“Did you say something, Jada?” he asked as I walked by.

“No.”

“I didn’t think so. Talking isn’t your thing, right?”

His friends giggled, while Miles frowned after sitting at the table.

“Quit it, RJ!” Miles said.

As soon as I got time with Simone and Lena at recess, I started questioning them.

“Did you tell anybody I was nervous about giving the speech?”

“What? I wouldn’t do that,” Lena said. “Cross my heart.”

“Simone?”

“No way!”

“Then how did RJ find out?”

I couldn’t believe that the one thing I wanted to keep quiet was the talk of lunch. We tried to figure out how RJ had heard. Suddenly Simone scrunched her eyebrows together and got a lightbulb look, like the answer just came to her. A second later, her face drooped.

“I think I saw someone walking by when we were talking,” she said slowly.

“Was it RJ?” I asked, ready to let him have it.

“No,” she said, looking down.

“Who was it?”

Simone looked up, and our eyes met.

“I think it was Miles.”
